"I am currently putting together a book on Colorado heroes. Although Lieutenant Hawkins spent most of her life in California, she was born at Fitzsimons Army Hospital, in Denver, Colorado, and her mother who died in 1926 is buried here.

She is one of fewer than two dozen women to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in history."
